Is anybody “good?”

May 30, 2008 at 3:35 am (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

I hate watching movies and TV shows where the hero is just and the villain is pure evil.

There’s a show on FX that I used to be addicted to. It was a cop show called The Shield. What I loved about it was the characters were all flawed. No one was good or bad. All of them were justified in their own minds. As a viewer you could see the characters make bad decisions that would affect their lives in bad ways, but the characters themselves seemed oblivious to the consequences to come.

I feel like this program shows life for what it really is.

The truth is that we are all flawed. We’re bad people who occasionally do good things.

We all picture ourselves as the hero character in a story about us.

This includes Christians.

We’re not always right. We’re not always good. We’re not always justified.

My favorite bible verse is 1st Corinthians 4:4.

Paul say’s “My conscious is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide.

This is a man of God admitting that he THINKS that he’s right, but he could be WRONG. He is doing the best he can to follow Christ, but he will probably mess up.

And that’s okay. We can be wrong sometimes. God loves us as we are. We should try our best to be faithful to him. And when we fall, (and we will) get back up and follow Him.

Talent Less

May 28, 2008 at 9:40 pm (Uncategorized) (, )

What do you do if your talent is your job?
What I mean is, how do you continue to have passion for a hobby that turns into your livelihood?

I love singing and playing guitar. But, now that I’m getting paid to do it, my practice time is more work than play. I can know longer go a few days without playing or it shows up in my performance. I have to continue to learn more and push my self further or there’s a chance I could loose my job.

The perk to this, is that I love my job. I put a lot more into it than I would some other 9 to 5er.

Does anyone else out there have a similar situation?

Reunion!

May 27, 2008 at 3:28 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

It seems like a lot of older bands are getting back together lately. I watched the B52’s perform on The Today Show yesterday. Chicago, The Police, and Journey all had summer tours last year. Even the New Kids On The Block are having a reunion.

This got me thinking about what older bands I want to see live.

Genesis would be at the top of my list. I would love to see these guys rock it one more time. Tears for Fears would be a close second. Last, but not least, would be Def Leppard (they will be here in August).

What are some of the bands that you want to see rockin’ it in their wheelchairs?

Indiana Jones 4

May 25, 2008 at 10:01 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

This was possibly the biggest let down in movie history. This movie sucked from start to finish. The CG was horrible. The story line was bad. The dialogue was cheesy.
This is the worst sequel ever!

vacation

May 22, 2008 at 3:41 am (Uncategorized) (, , )

My church staff and I just got back from a two day stay at a lake outside of Nashville.

It was wonderful. I feel like a different person. Our trip wasn’t cramed full of agendas. It was just time away to get our energy back.

Prior to this trip, I was feeling completly drained. Now my creativity is flowing like it should.

It’s amazing to me how getting away can truely remind you why you do what you do. God has breathed new life into my viens.

Thank God for vacations

Auditions for church music

May 14, 2008 at 10:34 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

This is the worst part of my awesome job

I hate that church music has become second best to other music. Aside from a karaoke bar, you wouldn’t just let someone up on a stage and to sing or play an instrument without auditioning that person first. Church music should be excellent.

People get mad at me all the time. “Anybody should be able to sing in church,” is what they tell me. I completely agree, but not everybody needs a mic.

Church is not supposed to be a place where someone can make an American Idol debut. It’s a place where sinners can come to find a relationship with Christ. It should be a place that they feel comfortable. No one feels comfortable with a bad singer on stage.

The church band should help the flow of worship. They should not be a distraction.

Here are two examples of people who should have auditioned.

Here’s a tape of us from January.

I’m not saying that our band is perfect, but we do use our talents to further the worship experience of our church.

Church worker’s sin

May 13, 2008 at 10:32 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

I used to think that people who worked in church were extra spiritual. I thought that God must bless them with the ability to avoid sin.

Two years ago, I got a job at a church. I was hoping that this job would extinguish the sin in my life.

Unfortunately, the sin is still here.

My struggle, as of late, has been my inability to control my tongue. I have the unique talent of stringing together sentences filled with four letter words that could make a sailor blush.

Call it a potty mouth disease.

Anytime I’m angry, I cuss.

Anytime I’m frustrated, I cuss.

Anytime there’s a lull in the conversations in my head, I cuss.

I don’t know why I struggle with this. I shouldn’t have to worry about an F-bomb falling out of my mouth any time I stump my toe.

Is this a problem for anyone else?

Unlucky?

May 11, 2008 at 11:40 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , )

Is luck biblical? If I believe in luck, does it contradict faith?
I really don’t have a clue.

My band for worship today was great in rehearsal and awesome during the first service. And then my bass player made a statement that would kill the rest of the day. He said, “Man, we’re doing great. We’re going to rock the second service!”

This is what you call a jinx.
This is setting your self up for failure. Any time you say “it’s going to be great,” it all falls apart.

And sure enough it did. We couldn’t get anything right in the second service.

And in the third service, my guitar crapped out.

This is what I call unlucky.

Do you believe in luck?
